5.5 Freight transportation<strong>Greater</strong> Montréal: a freight-transportationhub <strong>of</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>astern North AmericaThanks to its transportation infrastructure and geographiclocation within nor<strong>the</strong>astern North America, <strong>Greater</strong>Montréal is a freight-transportation hub, with severalintermodal facilities allowing for sea, rail, road and air transfers.The Port <strong>of</strong> Montreal, strategically positioned within <strong>the</strong>continent and boasting sophisticated intermodal capabilities,is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main North American gateways to freight fromEurope. It is <strong>the</strong> second-largest port for container trafficin <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast, after New York City-New Jersey. Thanksto its internal rail system, goods can be forwarded to <strong>the</strong>two rail networks serving <strong>the</strong> area (Canadian National andCanadian Pacific); <strong>the</strong>re is also a private road inside portlimits that serves <strong>the</strong> terminals and provides a link to <strong>the</strong>local road system.The area also boasts o<strong>the</strong>r significant intermodaltransportationcentres that interconnect sou<strong>the</strong>rn Ontario,<strong>the</strong> U.S. Midwest, <strong>the</strong> metropolitan areas <strong>of</strong> Boston andNew York City, and <strong>the</strong> Maritimes.
