18 www.nasuwt.org.ukAppointment of <strong>NASUWT</strong> <strong>Representatives</strong>The <strong>NASUWT</strong> is a democratic organisation run by teachers elected by their colleagues torepresent them. This is true from every <strong>NASUWT</strong> Representative to the National ExecutiveMembers and National Officers. Each year, usually in June/July, a meeting of members in theschool should be called and nominations for school-based Union positions (<strong>NASUWT</strong>Representative, Health and Safety Representative and Learning Representative) requested. Ifthere is more than one nomination for a position, a ballot should be held. Once elected, the<strong>NASUWT</strong> Representative should:lllinform the Local Association Secretary and Regional Centre;inform Headquarters by means of the election registration form included with thishandbook. This should be done each year;inform the headteacher and request that all consultation on conditions of service issuesbe conducted through the Representative.Every elected and registered <strong>NASUWT</strong> Representative will be issued with an official card validfor one academic year. This card accredits the Representative as the individual within theschool entitled to speak collectively on behalf of <strong>NASUWT</strong> members.The law requires additional accreditation for those representing members in disciplinary orgrievance hearings on the advice of their Local Association Secretary. The <strong>NASUWT</strong> issuestwo levels of accreditation, which is gained by attending appropriate <strong>NASUWT</strong> training.Upon completion of a Working Together (Stage 1) course, accreditation as an <strong>NASUWT</strong>Representative is issued and upon completion of a Casework (Stage 3) course, accreditationas a Casework Representative is issued.Aim to elect a Deputy <strong>NASUWT</strong> Representative within your school.Background Information
