60 www.nasuwt.org.uklllllllllEVCs must be confident that their own training,qualifications and experience and that of other staff areadequate to meet the varied demands of the proposed visit.EVCs must be able to demonstrate that an adequate riskassessment of each proposed activity has been carried outin advance and that all reasonable steps to eliminateforeseeable dangers have been taken.EVCs must ensure, in advance, that they have writtenconfirmation that they are conducting the activity on behalfof the employer and that the employer carries sufficientinsurance to cover the team leader and other staff against allclaims. EVCs should satisfy themselves that the terms ofsuch insurance cover have been checked.All staff should strictly follow all relevant governmentguidance and guidance provided by the employer, LA orgoverning body/board policy and guidance, as well as theadvice given by the <strong>NASUWT</strong>.EVCs should visit the location of the proposed visit inadvance to assess the likely risks, or be satisfied thatadequate risk assessments have been undertaken by acompetent person, preferably in the LOtC Quality Badgescheme.EVCs must ensure that the special educational needs (SEN)(including behavioural problems) and the medical needs ofchildren have been properly taken into account. EVCs musthave the final decision on the inclusion of any pupils whosepotential behaviour could pose a risk to themselves orothers, or whose medical needs could place anunacceptable burden of responsibility on accompanyingstaff. A risk assessment of violent and abusive behaviourmust be undertaken where there is the potential of harm toothers. Members need to be aware that such decisions maybe subject to provisions within the SEN and disabilitylegislation.Where children are to be placed in the care of other adults,EVCs must ensure that proper child protection issues havebeen addressed by the employer, including appropriate DBSchecks.EVCs must satisfy themselves that all adults in the party arefit persons to be in charge of children and that they are fullyinformed about the roles they are expected to fulfil and havereceived appropriate training.All teachers in a party must remain aware of the greatincrease in allegations of child abuse being made againstthemselves and others and must not place themselves in theposition of being alone with a child.For advice and help ˚ Local Association ˚ Regional Centre ˚ National Executive
