www.nasuwt.org.ukschool’s internal assessment procedure should be a single, simple, integrated system that has been the subject ofconsultation with staff and the NASUWT. It should be capable ofbeing accessed by support and administrative staff to enablethem to extract data for monitoring and other appropriatepurposes, including those associated with statutoryassessment.Assessing Pupils’ ProgressAssessing Pupils’ Progress (APP) is a nationally developed andstandardised approach to assessment that seeks to provide aframework within which teachers can make judgements aboutthe standard of pupils’ work and plan future learning activities. While its use is no longer formally mandated by the DfE, itremains the basis for internal assessment processes in manyschools. The materials principally consist of APP Assessment Guidelinesand Standards Files. The Assessment Guidelines set out thecriteria for each National Curriculum level and are central to theoperation of APP in practice. The Assessment Guidelinesconsist of sheets that allow for the assessment of pupils’ workin relation to national standards and provide a recording formatfor the assessment criteria in each subject at each level. The NASUWT is clear that ongoing assessment of pupils’ workis an integral feature of effective teaching practice and that theAPP materials, implemented effectively, have the potential toimprove assessment practice in schools. However, theNASUWT continues to receive reports from members that, insome schools and LAs, implementation of APP is beingundertaken in a way that undermines its potential to improveassessment practice and is leading to increased workload andbureaucratic burdens on teachers and headteachers. The Unionhas produced a dedicated briefing on APP, which is accessiblethrough the NASUWT website and sets out steps that NASUWTRepresentatives should take to ensure effective use of APP inthe school.85Further InformationUp-to-date informationon teachers’ pay scalesis contained on theNASUWT website:www.nasuwt.org.ukCrossing the Threshold– Guidance (NASUWT)School Teachers’ Payand ConditionsDocument (DfE)For advice and help ˚ Local Association ˚ Regional Centre ˚ National Executive
