www.nasuwt.org.uk11TrainingElected <strong>NASUWT</strong> <strong>Representatives</strong> all over the UK work hard to give teachers a voice in thedecisions that affect them and in standing up against injustice, unfairness and exploitation,wherever this occurs.Sensible employers welcome the positive contribution to good industrial relations made bywell-informed, skilful trade union representatives. The Coalition Government endorses thisview by granting representatives the right to time off work with pay to attend appropriatetraining courses organised by their trade union. The <strong>NASUWT</strong> plays its part by providing free,high quality education and training courses for all of its <strong>Representatives</strong>. No other teachers’union provides such a wide range of training opportunities.Training is progressive, with stage one and two training focused on school and collegeactivities. Stages three and four training are aimed at those <strong>Representatives</strong> involved inrepresenting members outside their own workplace or involved in complex casework oradvocacy.The <strong>NASUWT</strong> also provides training opportunities for members who may not hold electedoffice and you are encouraged to publicise these and involve your colleagues in the Union’straining and education programme. Full details and the facility to book online are available onthe <strong>NASUWT</strong> website: www.nasuwt.org.uk.Professional seminars on a variety of topics and other training events are available at venuesthroughout the UK. Travel expenses and other charges for members can often be claimedfrom school in-service training (INSET) budgets.Courses for <strong>NASUWT</strong> <strong>Representatives</strong>REPRESENTATIVES (STAGE 1): WORKING TOGETHERThis two-day course equips <strong>NASUWT</strong> <strong>Representatives</strong> with the essential knowledge, skillsand confidence needed to carry out the role of trade union representative in a school orcollege setting. This is an ESSENTIAL foundation course for every <strong>NASUWT</strong> Representative.Following successful completion of the course, the <strong>NASUWT</strong> will accredit participants as‘Workplace <strong>Representatives</strong>’.REPRESENTATIVES (STAGE 1): FOR INDEPENDENT AND ACADEMY SCHOOLREPRESENTATIVESThis two-day course is tailored especially for <strong>NASUWT</strong> <strong>Representatives</strong> working inindependent schools and academies. It equips <strong>NASUWT</strong> <strong>Representatives</strong> with the coreknowledge and skills needed to carry out the role of trade union representative in thesesettings. This is a perfect opportunity to meet other colleagues working in similarcircumstances and to discuss common problems with skilled tutors. This is an ESSENTIALfoundation course for every <strong>NASUWT</strong> Representative in an independent setting or anacademy. Following successful completion of the course, the <strong>NASUWT</strong> will accreditparticipants as ‘Workplace <strong>Representatives</strong>’.REPRESENTATIVES (STAGE 1): FOR SIXTH-FORM COLLEGESThis two-day course is tailored especially for <strong>NASUWT</strong> <strong>Representatives</strong> working in sixth-formcolleges. It equips <strong>NASUWT</strong> <strong>Representatives</strong> with the essential knowledge and skills neededto carry out the role of trade union representative in these settings.
