448 Johan AndersenSecond stageDiffers from third stage larvae, among other things, in thefollowing: length of head: 0.40-0.50 mm, width: 0.58-0.62mm, second antennal joint: i = 1.3-1.6, fourth antennal jointmore than half the third, prescutum barely separated fromscutum on the posterior abdominal tergites.First stageLength of head: 0.30-0.37 mm, width: 0.43 mm. Colour asin second and third stages, pronotum, however, not so dark.ee:OO = 0.68-0.80. Front margin of nasale (Fig. 25a and b)very narrow, in two specimens about triangular, while moremarked in the third. Joints of antennae (Fig. 26) very short,second joint as long as or a little shorter than fourth, secondjoint : i = 1.0-1.3. Second joint of maxillary palpi not as broadas in second and third stages, but not twice as long as broad.Terminal joint of outer lobe as long as or slightly longer thanbasal joint. Eggbursters probably as in B. argenteolum.Prescutum distinct, postscutum less distinct, separated fromscutum on prothorax. Prescutum and scutum not separated onthe other sclerites. Pronotum with 10, meso- and metanotumwith 7 or 8 and abdominal tergites with 5 setae on each side ofmedian line. Ventral side of eighth abdominal tergite with 10setae.Joints of legs short (Fig. 20), claw perhaps not as prominent asin first stage larva of B. argenteolum, but more conspicuous inthe two other specimens than on the figure.B. litoraleMaterial : 4 larvae in third stage, one reared was first observedin this stage 29.6.65, the three others taken in STi: Melhus 2.7.63, 16.7.64 and 11.8.64. One larva in second stage reared, firstobserved in this stage 18.6.65. One more larva was observed inSTi: Melhus 24.7.64, but was lost. The adults collected in STi:Melhus.T h i r d s t a g e (Head and prothorax Plate I, 2).Length of head : 0.60-0.65 mm, width : 0.80-0.95 mm.Head and legs light yellow or light orange. Mandibles andmiddle and hind parts of head brownish. Ocellar area black.Meso-and metanotum and abdominal tergites about monochrome,light brownish, somewhat darker than lightest parts ofhead. Scutum of pronotum very dark brown, contrast in colourbetween it and rest of body distinct. Ventral side of head andprosternum light orange, rest of ventral side yellowish white.
