398 Torgeir EdlandEggs for hatching were put in small Petri dishes (1.5 cm highand 9 cm in diameter), which were tied into ~lastic bags containinga moistened filte;'paper. The eggs weri hatched Tn thermocabinetsat constant temperatures of 20" and 30" C, and at varying,but recorded temperatures in a cellar and in a screenedenclosure in the research station's orchard. The egg dishes werechecked daily in 1963 and both morning and evening each dayin 1964.Dead insects from the experiments were pinned and dry-preserved.The number of spermatophores in the bursa copulatrixwas determined for most of the females. The procedure for thiswas as follows:The dry abdomen was softened in water for 1 or 2 days, thebursa copulatrix could then be easily drawn out of the abdomenby means of small, sharp forceps. The bursa copulatrix wascleaned by soaking it in cold 2 per cent KOH solution for 2-4days. The spermatophores could be counted through the transparentbursa sack. During most of the work, however, the spermatophoreswere more easily counted after being stained byfuchsin acid. A saturated solution of fuchsin acid in ethanol(96%) stained both the bursa sack and the spermatophores. Thebursa sack was then decoloured either by keeping it under running,hot, tap water, or by repeated dipping in 1 per cent KOHsolution followed by immediate washing in tap water.IResults and discussionIn the field the eggs of E. transversa are normally foundsingly on twigs, branches and trunks of the fruit trees, whereasin the experiments the eggs were most frequently laid in batches(Fig. 1).Fig. 1.
