From the top one canexperience a truly unforgettable view of North Dalmatia,of the island around Zadar along with the national parkKornati and of the mountain Velebit. The path can alsolead you to the other side of the island’s coast and to abeautiful cove with sandy ground – Željina. Even if you donot manage to find a goldfish, your desire for swimming incrystal clear sea can surely be granted.Other places on the island are northwest or southeastfrom Preko. On the southeastern side of the island thereis Kali or Kukljica, and on the northwestern side which issomewhat more spacious, lie the other four places – Poljana,Sutomišćica, and Ugljan. Kali is most famous as afisherman’s village, whose two little ports with fishing boatsgive a special charm to the place. In Kali you canlead long conversations with fishermen which will, as theyare repairing their fishing nets, gladly share their adventureswith you. Later on you can abandon yourself to therhythm of narrow streets and allow them to take you throughtypical Dalmatian structures made of stone up till abaroque church of St Lovre on the top of the hill whichoffers a breathtaking view. From Kali paths may take youto the bays Velika and Mala Lamjana on the other sideof the island. The place on the east end of the island isKukljica with a tourist resort “Zelena Punta” and within thecomplex there is the only discotheque on the island. Thefour neighboring islands – Bisage, Golac, Mišnjak and Karantunićas well as the two most popular beaches withsandy ground on Ugljan – Sabuša and nudist beach Jelenicaare also a part of the district. Kukljica is famous for itspoets and nights of čakavska poetry (dialectal Croatianpoetry), and a special attraction is the Feast Gospe odsniga (Virgin Mary of Snow), when a statue of the SnowyLady accompanied by some hundred boats from theparish church of St Pavle is carried to the votive chapel ofthe Snowy Lady situated in the passage Ždrelac, where,as tradition has it, snowed in the middle of the summersome five hundred years ago. From Preko all the way tothe eastern edge of the island and Ždrelac passage leadspromenade lungomare, after which one may followthe road and cross the bridge to the neighboring islandof Pašman. Up till 1883 when the canal was dug in orderto facilitate the passing of boats, the islands were practicallyconnected by a sandbank that could easily becrossed.Lungomare continues even west from Preko so you canwalk the coast alongside the entire Poljana which fromone side practically continues to Preko and from theother side is enclosed by St. Petar’ Cape with a romanchurch from the 13th century. From Poljana all paths leadto the centre of Sutomišćica, a location on the islandwhich is situated in one of the most protected coves onthe island.The locals still remember the days when their pier receivedferries from Zadar because the port in Preko which wasoften exposed to winds wasn’t available due to heavy51
