Above the cove, up in thehills, there is a hamlet called Dragotinice, witha few abandoned old houses, and the girl that grewinto an entrepreneur didn’t have doubts as where tobuild her own oasis. She didn’t lack the courage for thisproject seven years ago and started building a stonehouse of some 130 sqm.- I wanted to respect the nature, stones and trees, andwhile building new ideas just kept coming, so there werea lot changes in the original plan – says entrepreneurSpomenka Buzolić, originating from the island of Korčulaand now with an Italian address, whichdecided to take part in an adventure to get her ownparadise in this concrete era but at the same time torespect the nature and her own ideas.And the road to implementing this idea was more thanhard. It was necessary to find the owners of surroundingterrains which were ready to sell them in order to make aroad to the place where today stands a house made instone surrounded by garden cascades. Previously therewere two ruined old houses nobody lived in for decadesand one intended for cattle. The terrace which is in fact74the entrance-hall of the house is graveled, and one ofthe houses remained intact and now serves as storage.Through stone gateway one must pass massive woodendoors into the interior of the house which is special inmany ways.As the owner didn’t want to ruin the natural beauty ofthe landscape and concrete or bricks where out of thequestion, she had a hard task in front of her. She lookedall over Korčula for building stone. She bought off stonesfrom derelict houses and started building a house fromit on the foundations of the houses which were therepreviously. Besides that kind of stone, she also used theone from excavated foundations and cascades. In thelower level of the house, in whose interior there aren’tany doors except for the bathroom doors, the centreis taken by the living room whose extension is a verandain stone and glass overlooking the island of Lastovoand cove Orlandušica in the foothill. Floors made of oakbeams in their natural colour are enriched by originalseats made out of hard woven material filled with straw,which remind on old-style mattresses, while pillows fromSyria complete the entire space. In the middle of theroom the owner placed a table – a sculpture made outof teakwood roots - which came to Dragotinice from Bali
