Families and concerned community membersshould be provided with and encouraged <strong>to</strong> share <strong>in</strong>formation relat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><strong>the</strong> signs and symp<strong>to</strong>ms of <strong>substance</strong> use disorders and <strong>treatment</strong> optionswith <strong>in</strong>dividuals who have <strong>substance</strong> use disorders.• F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs also po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> impact of community and environmental fac<strong>to</strong>rson awareness of when and where <strong>to</strong> seek <strong>substance</strong> <strong>abuse</strong> <strong>treatment</strong>. Asenvironments characterised by better access <strong>to</strong> basic services, more<strong>in</strong>frastructure, and less disadvantage seem <strong>to</strong> enable awareness of<strong>substance</strong> <strong>abuse</strong> <strong>treatment</strong> services, <strong>in</strong>terventions should:o Focus on provid<strong>in</strong>g more <strong>in</strong>formational and tangible support <strong>in</strong>terms of resource materials <strong>to</strong> more disadvantaged and deprivedneighbourhoods.o Attempt <strong>to</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>n positive social networks <strong>in</strong> neighbourhoodscharacterised by high levels of disorder and disruption. Thesesupportive networks can act as an <strong>in</strong>formational resource foraccess<strong>in</strong>g <strong>substance</strong> <strong>abuse</strong> <strong>treatment</strong> services.6.4.2. Recommendations for <strong>in</strong>terventions that address geographicalaccessibility barriersBased on <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> geographical accessibility of <strong>treatment</strong> services is astrong predic<strong>to</strong>r of whe<strong>the</strong>r persons from HDCS utilize <strong>substance</strong> <strong>abuse</strong><strong>treatment</strong>, we make several recommendations for improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> accessibility ofexist<strong>in</strong>g services:• Given that <strong>the</strong> state’s failure <strong>to</strong> assess <strong>the</strong> <strong>substance</strong> <strong>abuse</strong> <strong>treatment</strong>needs of HDCs and gaps <strong>in</strong> <strong>treatment</strong> service coverage has led <strong>to</strong> anuneven dispersion of <strong>treatment</strong> resources; a start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t for develop<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>terventions that address geographical accessibility barriers would be amapp<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>treatment</strong> need and exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>treatment</strong> services <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cape</strong><strong>Town</strong> <strong>metropole</strong>.125
