The project demonstrates how the environmentally friendly activities for thedevelopment of an agricultural area can improve the local economy <strong>and</strong> business.Persina Nature Park (PNP) <strong>and</strong> Kalimok/Brushlen Protected Site (KBPS) wereselected as project sites due to the high value of their biodiversity, the wetl<strong>and</strong>capacity to extract biogenic pollutants <strong>and</strong> their role for flood prevention. Besidesboth of the territories are part of the initiative “The <strong>Danube</strong> River Downstream - aGreen Corridor”, which started in June 2000, with the objective to structure a networkof completely functioning wetl<strong>and</strong>s along the <strong>Danube</strong> River in Romania, Bulgaria,Moldova <strong>and</strong> Ukraine.Project implementation:This project is implemented in the framework of the Strategic Partnership forNutrient Reduction Strategy for the <strong>Danube</strong> <strong>and</strong> Black Sea Basins The objective ofthe strategic partnership is to assist the countries to invest in ensuring control orreduction of nutrient flux into the Black Sea water.The scope of works:The scope of works comprises carrying out a feasibility study <strong>and</strong> detailedtechnical designs, inclusive of cost estimates, for the necessary infrastructureimprovements required for the proposed wetl<strong>and</strong> restoration scenario. This includedpiled inlet/outlet sluice structures, rehabilitation of existing dikes <strong>and</strong> channels <strong>and</strong>new drainage canals.> Conduct additional necessary surveys> Carry out a technical feasibility of the proposed restoration alternatives38
