Moved to Saipan,lul-Oct 1944, and assigned to TwentiethAF. Began operations in Oct 1944 withattacks against Iwo Jima and the TrukIslands. Took part in the first attack (24Nov 1944) on Japan by AAF planes basedin the Marianas. Flew many missionsagainst strategic objectives in Japan; onnumerous raids, made its attacks in daylightand from high altitude. Received aDUC for a mission on 27 Jan 1945:although weather conditions prevented thegroup from bombing its primary objective,the unescorted B-29’s withstood severeenemy attacks to strike an alternate target,the industrial area of Hamamatsu.Awarded second DUC for attackingstrategic centers in Japan during Jul andAug 1945. Assisted the assault on Okinawain Apr 1945 by bombing enemy airfieldsto cut down air attacks against theinvasion force. Beginning in Mar 1945and continuing until the end of the warthe group made incendiary raids againstJapan, flying at night and at low altitudeto bomb area targets. Returned to the USin Nov 1945. Received a DUC forstriking the Mitsubishi aircraft engineplant at Nagoya on 23 Jan 1945. In Mar1945 began to conduct night attacks, flyingat low altitude to drop incendiaries on areatargets in Japan. Completed a series ofattacks against enemy airfields on Kyushuto aid the Allied assault on Okinawa inApr 1945 and received another DUC forthis action. Also dropped propagandaleaflets on Japan, and after the wardropped food and supplies to Allied prisonersof war. Returned to the US in Nov1945.
