Somecombat elements moved in the summer of1944 from the US to India where theycarried out very heavy bombardment operations against targets in Japan, Formosa,Thailand, and Burma. Other combat elementsbegan moving late in 1944 from theUS to the Marianas, being joined there
AIR FORCE COMBAT UNITS-AIR FORCES 47 1early in 1945 by the elements that hadbeen in India. Headquarters, which hadremained in the US, was transferred toGuam in Jul 1945. From the Marianasthe Twentieth conducted a strategic airoffensive that was climaxed by the droppingof two atomic bombs on Japan. Afterthe war the Twentieth remained in thetheater and eventually became part of FarEast Air Forces. Served in combat for ashort time at the beginning of the KoreanWar but later was concerned primarilywith logistic support for the operationsof other organizations and with air defensefor the Ryukyus.
