Headquarterswas remanned in Sep 1942 andassumed co’ntrol <strong>of</strong> AAF organizationsin Australia and New Guinea. The Fifthparticipated in operations that stopped theJapanese drive in Papua, recovered NewGuinea, neutralized islands in the BismarckArchipelago and the NetherlandsEast Indies, and liberated the Philippines.When the war ended in Aug 1945 elements<strong>of</strong> the Fifth were moving to theRyukyus for the invasion <strong>of</strong> Japan.
