1st BOMBARDMENT WINGWINGSOrganized as 1st Pursuit Wing in Franceon 6 Jul1918. Served in combat, Jul-Nov1918. Operated first in the defensive sectornear Toul. During the St Mihiel offensivein Sep, flew reconnaissance sorties,protected observation aircraft, attackedenemy observation balloons, strafed enemytroops, flew counter-air patrols, andbombed towns, bridges, and railroad stationsbehind the enemy’s lines. Duringthe Meuse-Argonne offensive (26 Sep-1 INov 1918) bombardment aircraft continuedtheir attacks behind the lines whilepursuit ships concentrated mainly onlarge-scale counter-air patrols. Demobilizedin France in Dec 1918.Reconstituted and consolidated (1936)with 1st Wing, which was organized inthe US on 16 Aug 1919 and was engagedin border patrol activities until it becamean advanced flying training wing in 1922.Znactivated on 26 Jun 1924.Redesignated 1st Bombardment Wingin 1929. Activated on I Apr 1931. Redesignated1st Pursuit Wing in 1933, 1stWing in 1935, and 1st Bombardment Wingin 1940. Became one of the original wingsof GHQAF in 1935 and conducted muchof the Army’s pursuit, bombardment, at-tack, and observation activities in thewestern part of the US until 1941. Movedto England, Jul-Aug 1942, and became aheavy bombardment wing of Eighth AF.Redesignated 1st Combat BombardmentWing (Heavy) in Aug 1943, and 1st BombardmentWing (Heavy) in Jun 1945.Served in combat in the European theaterfrom Aug 1942 until 25 Apr 1945, receivinga DUC for an attack on aircraftfactories in Germany on 11 Jan 1944.
