348 AIR FORCE COMBAT UNITS OF WORLD WAR I1escort for bombers during daylight raidson Japanese airfields and strongholds inthe Netherlands Indies and the BismarckArchipelago. Moved to New Guinea andbegan operations in Aug 1943. Receiveda DUC for missions in Aug 1943 whenthe group not only protected B-25’s thatwere engaged in strafing attacks on airdromesat Wewak but also destroyed anumber of the enemy fighter planes thatattacked the formation. Received secondDUC for intercepting and destroyingmany of the planes the Japanese sentagainst American shipping in Oro Bayon 15 and 17 Oct 1943. Covered landingsin New Guinea, New Britain, and theSchouten Islands. After moving to Biakin Jul1944, flew escort missions and fightersweeps to the southern Philippines, Celebes,Halmahera, and Borneo. Moved tothe Philippines in Oct 1944 and receivedanother DUC for bombing and strafingenemy airfields and installations, escortingbombers, and engaging in aerial combatduring the first stages of the Allied campaignto recover the Philippines, Oct-Dec194. Maj Thomas B McGuire Jr wasawarded the Medal of Honor: while voluntarilyleading flights of P-38’s escortingbombers that struck Mabalacat Airdromeon 25 Dec 1944 and Clark Field the followingday, he shot down seven Japanesefighters; on 7 Jan 1944, while attemptingto save a fellow flyer from attack duringa fighter sweep over Los Negroes Island,Maj McGuire risked a hazardous maneuverat low altitude, crashed, and waskilled. The group flew many missions tosupport ground forces on Luzon duringthe first part of 1945. Also flew escortmissions to China and attacked railwayson Formosa. Began moving to Ie Shimain Aug but the war ended before themovement was completed. Moved toKorea in Sep 1945 for occupation dutyas part of Far East Air Forces. Convertedto P-51’s in 1946. Moved to Japan in1948. Inactivated on I Apr 1949.Redesignated 475th Fighter Group (AirDefense). Activated in the US on 18 Aug1955.
