Using B-24’~,the group had the primary mission <strong>of</strong> carryingout antisubmarine patrols in an area<strong>of</strong> the Atlantic extending north and westfrom Morocco. Its antisubmarine activityreached a peak in Jul 1943 when enemyU-boats concentrated <strong>of</strong>f the coast <strong>of</strong> Portugalto intercept convoys bound for theMediterranean; by destroying and damagingseveral submarines during themonth, the group aided in protecting supplylines to forces involved in the campaignfor Sicily. The group also covered convoysand engaged numerous enemy aircraftin combat. In Sep 1943 part <strong>of</strong> thegroup moved temporarily to Tunisia andoperated in connection with the assaulton Italy; missions included searching forenemy submarines, covering Allied convoys,and protecting the Italian fleet afterthe surrender <strong>of</strong> Italy. The group wasawarded a DUC for actions that contributedto the winning <strong>of</strong> the Battle <strong>of</strong> theAtlantic. Moved to the US in Nov andDec 1943.
