Prepared for the invasion <strong>of</strong>the Continent and began operations bydropping paratroops <strong>of</strong> IoIst <strong>Air</strong>borne Divisionin Normandy on 6 Jun 1944 andreleasing gliders with reinforcements onthe following day, receiving a DUC anda French citation for these missions. Afterthe Normandy invasion the group ferriedsupplies in the United Kingdom untilthe air echelon was sent to Italy in Jul totransport cargo to Rome and evacuatewounded personnel. The detachmentdropped paratroops <strong>of</strong> 517th ParachuteInfantry Regiment along the Riviera toaid the invasion <strong>of</strong> Southern France on15 Aug 1944 and later towed gliders toprovide reinforcements; for these missionsthe group was again cited by the Frenchgovernment. After the air echelon returnedto England on 25 Aug, the groupresumed its cargo missions. In Sep thegroup moved to France for further operationsin support <strong>of</strong> the advancing Allies.Dropped paratroops <strong>of</strong> 82d <strong>Air</strong>borne Divisionnear Nijmegen and towed gliderscarrying reinforcements during the airborneattack on Holland, 17-25 Sep 1944.Participated in the Battle <strong>of</strong> the Bulge byreleasing gliders with supplies for IoIst<strong>Air</strong>borne Division near Bastogne on 27Dec 1944. Each aircraft <strong>of</strong> the grouptowed two gliders with troops <strong>of</strong> 17th<strong>Air</strong>borne Division and released them nearWesel when the Allies made the air assaultacross the Rhine on q Mar 1945.Continually hauled food, clothing, medicine,gasoline, ordnance equipment, andother supplies to the front lines and evacuatedpatients to rear-zone hospitals whennot engaged in airborne operations. Convertedfrom C-47's to C-46's, which wereused to transport displaced persons fromGermany to France and Belgium afterV-E Day. Returned to the US, Jul-Sep1945. Trained with G46 aircraft. Zn-activated on 10 Jun 1946.Redesigmted 439th Troop CarrierGroup (Medium). Allotted to the reserve.Activated on 27 Jun 1949. Orderedto active duty on I Apr ISI.Znactivated on 3 Apr 1951.Redesignated 439th Fighter-BomberGroup. Allotted to the reserve.
