Snow, carbon and tradition The Dolomites can be pretty inhospitablein November. The 27th of November 1927 is one of those days when a sharp windis blowing the first snow onto the roads. The wet gravel becomes slippery anddangerous. The young Italian, who had just been part of a larger group on the climbto the Croce d’Aune, is now leaning against the saddle of his bicycle, exhausted. With dirty hands, he’s running his fingers through his hair in disappointment. For several minutes, he’s been trying in vain to turn his rear wheel around. He needs the larger sprocket that is installed on the other side of the hub to defeatthe mountain but the fly nuts won’t yield. The field has disappeared, the race is over.Back in his workshop in Vicenza, Tullio Campagnolo starts tinkering and won’t stopuntil he’s found a solution that allows him to remove the rear wheel without anenergy- and time-consuming effort. Now he can tighten his wheel quickly and safely.A little later, he starts the Campagnolo company. And then events follow in rapidsuccession: 1930 sees the launch of the first rod-operated derailleur (rod gear),developed further into the parallelogram derailleur in the fifties – the functionalprinciple on which all derailleurs have been based to this day. Fausto Coppi andGino Bartali are the heroes of an era that also stands for a revolution in road biketechnology. On launching the Record, Campagnolo presents the first completecomponent set from a single source. The term ‘groupset’ has been coined. FollowingCampagnolo’s foray into motorsport with the production of superlight wheels in thelate fifties, even NASA starts using the expertise of the Italian company in the fieldof sand casting technology for magnesium alloys. When Campagnolo celebrates the50th anniversary with the Gruppo del Cinquantenario in 1983, the company can lookback on a remarkable success story. In the following years, Campagnolo mainly attracts attention with revolutionary bikewheels. 1986 marks the production of the Ghibli M23, the first disc wheel for roadand track cycling. In 1994, the Shamal wheel is launched on the market, causing asensation with Berzin’s Giro victory and Indurain’s Tour win. Then, in the late nineties, the carbon age starts for Campagnolo. The ErgoPower combined carbon brake andshift levers ring in a new generation of groups which, in the Record group, mainlyconsist of carbon components as early as in 2003. The carbon fiber Hyperon wheelsunderpin Campagnolo’s carbon fiber expertise in 2004.Another development from Vicenza, Campa’s UltraTorque design, causes the ultimatereplacement of the previous, typically used ISO square taper standard in 2006. Whenthe first 11-speed gearshift is launched on the market in 2008 the innovative Italiansare ahead of the power curve yet again. On taking the next step, the electronic EPSgearshift introduced in 2011, Campagnolo completes a development that had beeninitiated as much as 20 years earlier. Back then, GS1 teams were already usingelectric Campa gearshifts at major races such as the Giro and Tour, but it has takenthe idea until now to really catch on.After 80 years, the time has come to celebrate again, this time with the 80thAnniversary Limited Edition – a group for which the Italians again dug deep intotheir treasure chest of innovations. Glossy finishing techniques for aluminum partsand water sandblasting of fiber composite parts make for a particularly refined andhigh-grade finish. This Super Record group weighs only 1,862 grams and marks theculmination of a development that started with the Gran Sport derailleur back in 1950.Campagnolo has revolutionized road bike technology and consistently driven andperfected it through innovation – though energy and strength of spirit continue to bethe only things that help against a cold November wind – but a rider certainly doesn’thave to stop to change gears anymore.
