The search for the “lost ark” hasinspired a number of novels and a movie, based in part on areal-life figure. 62 Some premillennialists also have searched forthe ashes of the red heifer, which would allow Jews to enter theTemple Mount, while others have supported Jewish attempts atbreeding red heifers. 63 A new interest has arisen in Christianevangelical conservative circles in the Temple building, its interiorplan, and its sacrificial works as well as in the priestly garmentsand utensils. A number of books on these subjects have enjoyedpopularity in Christian premillennialist circles. 64 The rebuiltTemple has played an important role in evangelical novels andfictions. The growing importance of the building of the Temple inevangelical eyes demonstrates itself clearly in the Left Behindseries. The novel and its sequels promote the premillennialistunderstanding that the rebuilt Jewish Temple stands at the centerof the events that were to precede the arrival of the messiah 65 anddescribes one of the antichrist’s “schemes” as orchestrating theremoval of the mosques and their transfer to New Babylon. 66 Thenovel, however, is oblivious to the history of Christian evangelical–Jewish Orthodox cooperation over the prospect of rebuildingthe Temple and the proactive attitude that many evangelicalChristians have shown toward the idea that Jews prepare for, andbuild, the Temple.
