The Temple, <strong>the</strong>y have concluded, could<strong>the</strong>refore be rebuilt without destroying <strong>the</strong> existing mosques,thus providing a “peaceful solution” to <strong>the</strong> problem of how tobuild <strong>the</strong> Temple at a site that is holy to <strong>the</strong> Muslims. 61Christian proponents of building <strong>the</strong> Temple have not limited<strong>the</strong>ir efforts to finding its exact site. Some have searched for <strong>the</strong>lost Ark of <strong>the</strong> Covenant, adding a touch of adventure to apotentially explosive topic. The search for <strong>the</strong> “lost ark” hasinspired a number of novels <strong>and</strong> a movie, based in part on areal-life figure. 62 Some premillennialists also have searched for<strong>the</strong> ashes of <strong>the</strong> red heifer, which would allow Jews to enter <strong>the</strong>Temple Mount, while o<strong>the</strong>rs have supported Jewish attempts atbreeding red heifers. 63 A new interest has arisen in Christianevangelical conservative circles in <strong>the</strong> Temple building, its interiorplan, <strong>and</strong> its sacrificial works as well as in <strong>the</strong> priestly garments<strong>and</strong> utensils. A number of books on <strong>the</strong>se subjects have enjoyedpopularity in Christian premillennialist circles. 64 The rebuiltTemple has played an important role in evangelical novels <strong>and</strong>fictions. The growing importance of <strong>the</strong> building of <strong>the</strong> Temple inevangelical eyes demonstrates itself clearly in <strong>the</strong> Left Behindseries. The novel <strong>and</strong> its sequels promote <strong>the</strong> premillennialistunderst<strong>and</strong>ing that <strong>the</strong> rebuilt Jewish Temple st<strong>and</strong>s at <strong>the</strong> centerof <strong>the</strong> events that were to precede <strong>the</strong> arrival of <strong>the</strong> messiah 65 <strong>and</strong>describes one of <strong>the</strong> antichrist’s “schemes” as orchestrating <strong>the</strong>removal of <strong>the</strong> mosques <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir transfer to New Babylon. 66 Thenovel, however, is oblivious to <strong>the</strong> history of Christian evangelical–Jewish Orthodox cooperation over <strong>the</strong> prospect of rebuilding<strong>the</strong> Temple <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> proactive attitude that many evangelicalChristians have shown toward <strong>the</strong> idea that Jews prepare for, <strong>and</strong>build, <strong>the</strong> Temple. The building of <strong>the</strong> Temple in <strong>the</strong> Left Behindseries becomes a Jewish cause, one that brings Jews to support <strong>the</strong>energetic <strong>and</strong> charming Nicolae Carpathian, <strong>the</strong> antichrist.robin-bobin
