obin-bobin3What Does the Bible SayAbout the End Times?A Biblical Studies Discussion ofInterpretive MethodsMark ReasonerThe Left Behind series calls its readers to pay attention to theBible. But does the Bible really say what the Left Behind authorssuggest? Is the series trustworthy in its interpretation of the Bible? To answer these questions, this chapter considers the interpretivechoices Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins have made on anumber of issues and compares them with some alternativeviewpoints. My conclusion is that while the biblical views of theLeft Behind authors may be legitimate readings, they are notmandated by the biblical text. The Left Behind scenario is notwhat many Christians believe will happen, nor is it the onlypicture of the end times that one might glean from the Bible. The view of the end times that the Left Behind series offers isthe result of five interpretive choices that Tim LaHaye and JerryJenkins make as they read the Bible. Of course, the authors alsomake interpretive choices as they approach social and politicalissues, but those are considered in another chapter in this volume. This chapter’s task is to help explain how LaHaye andJenkins move from the Bible to the plot of the Left Behindrobin-bobin
