Although the exact target of the fear shiftswith the particular circumstances of each time and place, thegeneral fear of world unity remains in place.Fear of the One World Government is not the only manifestationof the fear of world unity in the Left Behind series. Thebooks also depict a One World Religion under the figureheadPontifex Maximus Peter Mathews. In this case, all of theworld’s religions join together and emphatically declare thatbelief is irrelevant and that all religions are in fact the samething. The pope-like characteristics of Pontiff Peter have ledCatholics to declare the Left Behind series anti-Catholic. Clearlythis figure and the Enigma Babylon One World Faith embody afear of ecumenism and a fear of religious bodies, like governments,joining together. If a One World Religion is as much tobe feared as a One World Government, following that logic, anyunification of religious bodies portends evil. From this perspective,when the Lutherans and the Episcopalians decide to shareone communion, we can take that as evidence of Satan’s work inthe world. When Christian and Buddhist leaders meet togetherin an attempt to find common ground, we can take that as asign of the end times. In this worldview, disagreement is prizedabove agreement and division above unity.The more we follow this logic, the more tangled it becomes.On one hand, a One World Religion points to the coming ofChrist. It is one of many factors that usher in the end of theworld. Presumably this is good, since all Christians celebrate thesecond coming of Christ. On the other hand, unity among religionsand nations is evidence of Satan’s work in the world,something of which Christians ought to be wary (notwithstandingthe obvious contradiction that Christians themselves wantto convert everyone to Christianity and produce a One WorldReligion).
