AITSL was established to provide national leadership in promoting excellence in theprofession of teaching and school leadership.On 14 December 2009 the then Minister for Education, Employment and WorkplaceRelations issued a Letter of Expectation for AITSL, on behalf of all the members ofthe Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs(MCEECDYA). The letter outlined priorities and expectations, including how AITSL wouldwork with the Ministerial Council, the Commonwealth Minister and stakeholders, andits budget. On 23 March 2012 the Minister for School Education issued a new Letterof Expectation for AITSL on behalf of all members of the Standing Council on School continued to support the implementation by schools, sectors and systems of theNational Professional Standards for Teachers through a new website, 17 pilot projectsand illustrations of practice across the seven standards at all four career stages led a project to enhance opportunities for teachers to be adequately prepared toteach Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and to understand and respectAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and perspectives to promotereconciliation in line with the National Professional Standards for Teachers - Standards1.4 and 2.4 partnered with the Asia Education Foundation in a project to explore and provideadvice on measures to build an Asia-capable teaching workforce that actively engagesstudents in becoming Asia literate continued to support the implementation of the endorsed Standards and Proceduresfor accreditation of initial teacher education programs, including through training anddevelopment and guidance materials, and to provide advice to Ministers on initialteacher education matters worked with the early childhood sector on application of initial teacher educationprograms and accreditation for teachers in the sector brokered a nationally consistent approach to teacher registration which was endorsedby Ministers in October 2011 was endorsed by Ministers in April 201228 AITSL Annual Report 2011–2012
