As Director of a Life Enrichment Center, I
am very familiar with the signs and stages of
senility as well as dementia and alzheimers.
While the aging process is a natural process,
it can be very hard at times. It can be hard
for the aging and hard for their loved ones.
Often I see elderly people being abused by
family members as well as outsiders. It is
not always done purposely either, but when
an elderly reaches a particular place in their
minds they can become irritating to their
family and/or caregivers. When a person has
lived with their parents most all of their lives
and suddenly they don’t understand why
the parent acts the way they do, it becomes
alarming to them and it is very easy to mishandle
situations. There are many ways to
deal with issues that arise from taking care
of the elderly, and there are things that need
to be avoided as well. The world lacks understanding
when it comes to taking care of the
aging and there is a great need to become
more educated in this area. The most important
part of that education should come from
scripture as there is no greater example
of the importance of the elderly than that
spoken of in God’s Word.
Dealing With The Elderly/Elderly Parents:
We need to understand that as we begin to
age, not only does our bodies begin to frail
and lose strength, our minds also begin to
cloud slightly. Some deal with simple senility
right up unto their deaths, while others may
experience dementia or even alzheimers.
These deal with greater loss of memory. It
will start off as slight senility and begins to
progress into the early stages of dementia/
alzheimers and can eventually lead to total
loss of memory. As family members of these
it becomes hard to deal with issues that are
apparent, yet not what we want to accept
as reality. It is then easier to brush off little
things and excuse memory losses or place
blame on the aging person. We must learn
how to accept that our frail parents and family
members or church members are dealing
with very real problems, and we must also
remember that they are loved dearly by God.
His Word says this is Isaiah 46:4 “And even
