The next important discovery of 22gold coins," Dr. Bidie writes," took place in the Madura district in a piece of waste land near thevillage of Caliempootoor in the Tyempully taluk in the 23year 18<strong>56</strong>.Two tank-diggers, while excavating brick-earth there, came upon anearthen pot, about the size of a mango, containing 63 coins of theRoman emperors. The pot was found about 1 j feet below the surfaceof the ground and near the bank of the river Shunmooguni Naddy,which is adjacent to the boundary of the Madura and Coimbatoredistricts. Before the authorities became aware of the discovery, 6 ofthe coins were made away with by the finders. The Government thendirected that the whole of the remaining 57 should be purchased andsent to Madras, but only 28 were ultimately received, the remainderhaving been sold or. lost in the Madura district. This is much to beregretted, as it is not improbable that, amongst those which were keptback, there may have been coins of dynasties not represented in themuseum. The Madura coins form the chief portion of the Roman seriesin the museum."
