71at a small expense, and been made withconsiderable profit to theCompany, superseded the use of cowrie shells, and most likelybeen melted down to form brass, as the copper was in variousparts of the Company's dominions, thus affording a continuedsource of profitto the Company.By Act XIII, 1844, it was enacted " that, from the 1st day of 1844.August 1844, the Trisoolee pice struck for the province of Benares,under the provisions of Regulations X of 18<strong>01</strong>) and VII of 1814,and at the Saugor mint, shall cease to be a legal tender withinthe province of Benares." And that until the said 1st day of August 1844, suchTrisoolee pice shall be received on account of the Government,and shall be exchanged by take (that is to say, every Trisooleepice paid in shall be received as one Company's pice and oneCompany's pice shall be given for every Trisoolee pice presentedfor exchange) at such treasuries or other places within the provinceof Benares as shall be pointed out for that purpose in anyproclamation of the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-WesternI 3 rovinces" And that it shall be lawful for the said Lieutenant- Governor,if he shall see fit,to order that in any case one Company's rupeeshall be given for every sixty-four Trisoolee pice so presented forexchange, and that in every case one Company's rupee shall begiven for every sixty-four Trisoolee pice accordingly."<strong>In</strong> 1844 a further Act (No. XXII) was" passed for regulatingthe copper coinage of the mints in the territories of the East<strong>In</strong>dia Company," by which it was enacted " that from and afterthe passing of this Act the following copper coins only shall beissued from any mint within the territories of the East <strong>In</strong>diaCompany:1. A pice weighing... ... ... 100 grs. troy.2. Double pice weighing... ... 2003. A pie or one-twelfth of an annaweighing33Jwith such devices as shall be fixed for the same by the Governor-General " in Council.And that from and after the passing of this Act the saidpice shall be a legal tender throughout the territories of the East<strong>In</strong>dia Company ^ for of the Company's rupee, and the saiddouble pice for -^ of the Company's rupee, and the said pie fory^r of the Company's rupee."<strong>In</strong> a minute by a member of the Madras Mint Committee on 1845.the question of the advisability of the practice of receivinguncurrent coins at the provincial treasuries, dated 1st April 1845,it is stated that " the practice of receiving uncurrent coins at theprovincial treasuries at certain rates of exchange has existedalmost from the period of the assumption of the country, and wasadopted mainly, if not entirely, with the view of displacing theold currency by the new. ... It would be desirable to ask theopinion of the Board of Revenue whether they considered therefusal generally in all districts to receive a foreign currency atthe provincial treasuries in payment of revenue would be attendedwith any prejudicial effects if ; not, I should make the refusal ageneral one.
