Majors and Courses of InstructionEducationGraduates who complete the prescribed coursework in education and content area fields, studentteaching, and other requirements of the State of Ohio, and who pass the State-mandated PraxisII examination(s), are entitled to an Ohio provisional teaching license. The teacher educationprogram is approved by the State of Ohio Department of Education, and it has achieved nationalaccreditation through the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).The University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the NorthCentral Association. Ohio maintains formal reciprocal agreements with 27 other states, thus theOhio license is recognized by most other states. Candidates desiring a teaching license from anotherstate should consult with the education department early in their junior year to discuss reciprocityand/or organize their programs to meet the requirements of the states concerned.Beginning with their first education course, candidates spend a minimum of 100 hours in localschool classrooms observing and assisting teachers, and teaching lessons based on ideas developedin methods courses. All candidates seeking licensure student teach for 15 weeks, resulting in a totalof over 400 hours in the classroom. Full-time faculty members in the education department takepart in the supervision of student teachers. In addition, teachers at the Early Childhood Centerwork with candidates in the PreK-3 licensure program, and full-time faculty from the arts andsciences supervise AYA and multi-age candidates in their subject area. Student teachers meet forweekly seminars and receive a minimum of eight formal observations during the semester. Studentteaching takes place through agreements with local schools and through a consortial program inPhiladelphia.2009-10 DataDuring the 2009-10 academic year, 31 students completed their teacher education program. Ofthese, fourteen were in the Early Childhood education program, one in the Middle Childhoodprogram, three in Music and Social Studies, two in Physical Education, one in English, fourin Spanish and three in Visual Arts. Female students made up 71%; male, 29%. The overallenrollment at OWU was 1907: 54% female and 46% male. International enrollment was 9%;American Indian/Alaskan Native was .5%, Asian/Pacific was 1.5%; Black, non-Hispanic was 5%;Hispanic was 1.5%; White, non-Hispanic was 79.5%; and Race/ethnicity unknown was 3%.Of the 31 program completers, 31 took the Praxis II examination(s) in their teaching area. In areaswhere ten or more OWU students took the same examination, the passing rates were as follows:Principles of Teaching and Learning (7-12), 100%; Early Childhood Education, 100%. The staterates for these tests were 97% and 100% respectively.One hundred and five students were formally enrolled in the teacher education program in2009-10. Of those 19% were male, 81% female. Four full-time and two part-time EducationDepartment faculty members supervised student teachers, along with members of the arts andscience faculty, for a student-faculty ratio of about 4.5. Students completed a total of fifteen weeksof full-time student teaching, totaling 450 hours of in-class experience.102
