Majors and Courses of InstructionPre-MedicinePre-Veterinary MedicinePre-Medicine/Pre-Dentistry MajorPre-Medical/Dental Advisor — Dr. Gatz, ZoologyThe pre-medicine/pre-dentistry major includes those courses normally required for admission tocolleges of medicine and dentistry, as well as correlative courses providing a broad backgroundin the natural sciences. Students should consult the pre-medical/dental advisor early in theircollege careers for the admissions requirements of specific medical or dental schools. Courses forthis major may not be taken on a credit/no entry basis. A general description of Ohio Wesleyan’spre-professional programs appears in the previous chapter of this Catalog, Degrees and SpecialPrograms. This major is best suited for students wishing to combine it with a minor or second major. Incontrast, those pursuing a single major are encouraged to consider regular departmental majors inbiology, chemistry, or other areas. In order to prepare for the Medical College Admission Test or the Dental Admission Test normallytaken in the spring of the junior year, it is suggested that majors include courses in their schedules asfollows:Freshman Year: introductory chemistry and mathematics and/or biologySophomore Year: introductory physics or organic chemistry and biologyJunior Year: introductory physics or organic chemistry and at least one upper-level biology course.Students should work closely with their advisors to ensure that their individual course sequenceswill prepare them for professional school.Core Courses: CHEM 110, 111, 260, 261; one from among CHEM 270, 340 and 350; MATH110 (111 is also strongly recommended); PHYS 110, 111 or PHYS 115, 116; BOMI/ZOOL 120;two from among BOMI 280; BOMI/ZOOL 271, 351, 356; ZOOL 325, 331, 333; and one upperlevelcourse, preferably with a laboratory, in one of the core science areas. Independent research or asummer research experience is recommended.Other Suggested Courses: CHEM 341; ENG 260, 265, 310; MATH 105 or 230 or PSYC 210;PSYC 310, 343, 344, 410; SOAN 347.Pre-VeterinaryMedicinePre-Veterinary Advisor — Dr. Carreno, ZoologyRequirements imposed by the nation’s 28 veterinary schools are generally more variable and moreextensive than those required by schools of human medicine and dentistry. Most students will bebest served by choosing a major in pre-professional zoology rather than the interdepartmental premedicine/dentistrymajor. It is essential that interested students contact the pre-veterinary advisorduring the freshman or sophomore year so that course sequences can be tailored to the intendedveterinary school’s requirements. In addition to course selection, students need to plan to preparefor the MCAT or the Graduate Record Examination taken in the junior or senior year, and to gainexperience working with animals.241
