Majors and Courses of InstructionChemistryprepared for graduate study in chemistry and biochemistry and for industrial research. This majoris strongly recommended for students pursuing a career in biochemistry. These courses are required: CHEM 110, 111, 260, 261, 270, 340, 341, 350, 351, 352, 460,470, 490; one full-unit equivalent of biochemistry-related offerings from CHEM 480, 490, 491or (with approval of the chemistry department) BOMI 490, ZOOL 490; MATH 110, 111 andeither 210, 270 or 280; PHYS 110, 111; BOMI/ZOOL 120; one course from BOMI/ZOOL271, 351, 356, BOMI 280, 326, 328, 353, 357, ZOOL 333.Recommendations. Students electing to do the Basic Major are encouraged to increase theircurricular development by taking additional science courses, particularly if they wish to pursuegraduate work in chemistry. In selecting those courses students should consult with theiracademic advisers and the chemistry faculty. When possible, chemistry majors are encouraged to complete courses such as 340 and 351 by theend of their junior years. This schedule will maximize the value of research experiences availableboth within and outside of the department.Students interested in graduate study in chemistry should demonstrate their mastery of thediscipline by taking the chemistry (subject) test of the Graduate Record Examination byDecember of the senior year.Secondary Education Licensure:Students interested in teaching high school chemistry are required to meet chemistry licensurerequirements. The specific requirements are available from the education department.Minor: 110, 111, 260, 261, and one of 270, 340, or 350.Courses105. The World of Chemistry (Staff )Designed to provide nonscience majors with a basic understanding of chemistry and how thisknowledge can be useful and important in their daily lives. No laboratory. F. May not be takenfor credit after successful completion of CHEM 110.110. General Chemistry I (1.25 units; Staff)A comprehensive survey of the principles of chemistry, including such topics as atomic andmolecular structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, states of matter, andthermochemistry. The laboratory experiments are designed to illustrate and reinforce the topicscovered in lecture. F.111. General Chemistry II (1.25 units; Staff)A continuation of survey of the principles of chemistry, including such topics as solutions, various equilibrium systems, kinetics, main group elements, transition metals and coordinationchemistry, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. The laboratory experiments are designed toillustrate and reinforce the topics covered in lecture. Prerequisite: C- in Chem110; S.230. Environmental Chemistry (Staff)The course focuses on the connection between chemistry and society. Environmental issuessuch as pollution, ozone-depletion, and the Greenhouse Effect will be examined with respect to78
