In addition, themathematics major can be designed to include a concentration in statistics. The department alsooffers the computer science 3-2 option major for those students planning to pursue a combineddegreepre-engineering program (see also the Catalog section “Combined-Degree Programs” forgeneral information on pre-engineering programs).The department provides courses for students anticipating graduate work in computer science,mathematics, and statistics, and for those wishing to use the mathematical sciences as a tool, thosewishing to teach, and those who simply would like to know something about computer science,mathematics, or statistics.Majors often take advanced courses in other departments directly complementing their studiesin mathematics or computer science. Double majors with mathematics or computer scienceand a related area, such as economics or physics, are often undertaken. Upon graduation, recentmajors have entered business, management science, statistical research, computing, actuarialwork, environmental research, teaching, and graduate school in computer science, mathematics,philosophy, physics, economics, business, law, and medicine. Programs are tailored to the interestsof the student with a minimum of courses specified. Potential majors and others interested shouldconsult with any member of the department in planning their course work.Students wishing to concentrate in computer science should contact Professors McCulloch, Wiebe,or Zaring. Those wishing to concentrate in statistics should see Professor Linder. Those wishing toconcentrate in secondary education should contact the department, and those wishing to preparefor graduate study in mathematics should contact Professors Jackson, Nunemacher, or Schwartz.Mathematics major: 111, 210, 250, 270, 340 or 370, and a minimum of four additionalmathematics courses numbered 230 or above. Also, CS 110 or equivalent knowledge ofprogramming. It is suggested that MATH 250 and CS 110 be completed by the end of thesophomore year.It is possible to do a concentration in statistics within the mathematics major. To obtain the majordesignation Mathematics major (Statistics Concentration), one must complete a mathematicsmajor which includes 230, 340, 350, and either 360 or 365 (preferably both).Some students complete a Mathematics major with the goal of being licensed to teach mathematicsin secondary school. In order to meet the licensure requirements in Ohio these students must select230 and 320 among their electives and also take 370.175
