Majors and Courses of InstructionModern Foreign LanguagesSalamanca Program499. The Real and Marvelous Border Literature and Cultures (Rojas)This seminar explores the Spanish Colonial and indigenous literary expression of Pre-ColumbianAmerica and how it influences the US/Mexico Border cultures and literature. The seminar will haveemphasis on Náhuatl, Mayan May-Quiché and Zapotec-Toltec cultures. A study of the cosmic mythsof creation will be followed by consideration of the gods and goddesses of the Aztec pantheon:Quetzalcóatl, Tlaloc, Huitzilopotchtli, Coatlicue, as they are evoked in Náhuatl festival theatre,epic and lyric poetry, and sacred hymns. The components of the native cultures cosmogonyworld-view—religious, mythic, historical, artistic, socio-political aspects—will be explored andcompared to those of U.S. Hispanics including those of the popular beliefs of the year 2012. Alsoinvestigation of the indigenous accounts of the Conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, as found in theCodice Florentino of Sahagún and the icnocuicatl or elegiac poems, will be followed by analysis ofthe themes and structure of the Maya-Quiché masterwork: Popol-Vuh. We will also read selectionsand excerpts from Colonial chronicles written in the actual US Southwest such as the ones fromEscobar, Cabeza de Vaca and Marcos de Nize. We will follow with recent works of Chican andauthors such as Gloria Anzaldúa, Miguel Méndez, Renato Rosaldo, Margaret Montoya and evenOctavio Paz. Extensive use of cultural materials ranging from art, films, pictures, masks andother objects will aid in the comprehension and analysis of the readings. Prerequisite: must havecompleted two courses in the 300 level. S.Ohio Wesleyan is affiliated with the University of Salamanca, Spain. Each fall, qualified OhioWesleyan students may study in Salamanca and receive credit in Spanish and history through OhioWesleyan. Up to three (3) course credits from Salamanca may be counted toward the Spanishmajor. Spanish Grammar (Carlos Cabrera)An intensive review of spoken and written Spanish. This course is designed to facilitate studentprogress in the literature and history courses in the program and will give special attention to thesyntax, vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions of Spanish. It is also designed as a continuation of theorientation period study of the Spanish language.359. The History of Spanish Art (Jesús Jimenez)A review of Spanish art history, with special attention given to the artistic tradition of Salamanca.This class will also prepare students for field trips to Castilian museums of art, architecture andsculpture. May not be counted toward the major or minor for Spanish. Fulfills Group IV Artsdistribution.374. Topics in Latin-American Narrative (María Ángeles Pérez López)Intensive review of the Latin-American narrative, the course will follow a selection of works of themost renowned writers of the twentieth century. Compositions and class conversations are basedon selected topics such as magical realism, neo-fantasy, irony, de-mystification, and genre, amongothers. Authors include Horacio Quirogo, Alfredo Byrce Echenique, Isabel Allende, Rosario Ferré,Julio Cortázar, Gabriel Garcia Márquez, Luisa Valenzuela, and Ana Maria Shua.196
