Major Courses of InstructionEast Asian Studiesbroad background in East Asia from the perspective of at least three academic disciplines and aspecialization in a specific East Asian country. Students interested in pursuing a major or minorin East Asian Studies should contact the director of the program by the end of the second year atOWU. East Asian Studies Advisory Committee members: John Boos (Economics), Ji Young Choi(Politics and Government), Xiaoming Chen (History), Joy He (Library), Xudong Jin (Library), R.Blake Michael (Religion), James Peoples, EAS Program Director (Sociology/Anthropology), AnneSokolsky (Humanities-Classics), Ching-Hsuan Wu (Modern Foreign Languages).MajorMinorCourses in EastAsian StudiesMinimum of 9 courses plus language courses.The East Asian Studies major requires a second major of the student’s choice and a concentration ina selected country. It also requires:Study abroad: Participation in an approved study abroad program in East Asia (semester/yearabroad or summer program). Programs not listed in the OWU Catalog must be approved inadvance by the EAS Committee.Language requirement: Minimum of four semesters of college language study in a languageappropriate to the country chosen for study abroad. East Asian languages currently availableconsist of five semesters of Japanese and six semesters of Chinese. Numerous courses on East Asianliterature are taught, all in English.Required courses:• HIST 116, SOAN 293, plus one history and one religion course from Category Ibelow.• Five additional courses: At least three must be from Category I and the remaindermay be from Category II or an Independent Study course. At least four must beupper level courses.• Six courses must deal substantially with the selected country.• Senior Thesis: A research paper written as an independent study project or asan extension of the normal requirements for a course in the major. The thesis, ofabout 30 pages, must focus on the student’s selected country and must be approvedby the EAS committee or program director.The minor requires a minimum of five courses, at least three of which must be from CategoryI. Three semesters of study in an East Asian language also are required. Directed Readings orIndependent Studies courses may substitute for one of the courses in Category II.Category I: Courses with a primary focus on East Asia or an East Asian country. ART 348, CHIN490, ECON/EMAN 345, HIST 322, 323, 324, 325, HMCL 355, HMCL 499A (Sokolsky only),PG 349, REL 104, REL 346, THEA 331.Category II: Courses not focusing specifically on East Asia, but including substantial East Asiancontent. Students who wish to apply courses from Category II for credit in the major or minormust complete a research paper or project dealing with East Asia. Approval of the paper must begranted by the instructor and by the Director of East Asian Studies. Category II courses include:ECON 353, HMCL 127, HMCL 375, MUS 348, PG 300, SOAN 360.84
