Majors and Courses of InstructionHealth and Human Kinetics383. Methods of Teaching Physical Education: Secondary School Years (0.5 unit; Knop,Staff)Introduction of an overview of theory and practical experiences for teaching movement activities tosecondary school students. Implementing teaching protocols, selecting developmentally appropriateactivities and instructional strategies, and understanding the importance of movement, exercise, andwellness as part of a healthy lifestyle for secondary school age students are critical elements of thecourse. The course design is created to assist future teachers in successfully working towards a goalof physically educated people. Prerequisite: EDUC 251 or consent. F.384. Field Experience (0.5 unit, Knop, Staff)This practicum is designed to be taken after students are accepted into the Education departmentand have taken at least one methods course. Students participate in a series of planned andmentored field experiences at their preferred level of physical education teaching (pre-school,elementary, middle, or high school). These experiences will include focused observations andthe integration of theory and practice as students plan and teach lessons and make appropriatecurricular and pedagogical decisions in a school environment. Prerequisites: acceptance intoeducation department, 0100, 260, and one of 381, 382, or 383. See EDUC 384. F.395. Adult Fitness: Prescription, Delivery, and Assessment Evaluation (Knop, Staff)This course allows students to develop the skill and ability to carefully and competently delivereffective and appropriate fitness training to adults, as, throughout the semester, students practice,deliver, and critically assess their ability to instruct group and personal training sessions. They willlearn self-assessment methods to evaluate their delivery skill and pedagogical decision making. Later,they also will be responsible for the development of appropriate prescriptive programming for theirspecific population, researching the needs of their client base using qualitative methods of inquiry(researching probable fitness needs of the general population, subjectively and objectively assessinga specific client’s needs, and interviewing selected clients relative to how their needs are being met),while attempting to understand exercise adherence concerns that may limit client participation.Students will use exercise prescription theory to understand, develop, and modify fitness planningacross the semester, ultimately creating a sequential progression to meet the needs of their clients.Several times during the semester, students will present findings to the class as a case study. Studentswill work toward competency, developing and delivering a progressive and holistic strength andcardiovascular program. Prerequisites; PE 140 or 141, PE 260 and current CPR and First Aidcertification.490. Independent Study (Staff)Guided research projects and independent study for outstanding departmental majors. The courseis completed under the guidance of a faculty member. Student must present a summary of his/her work to the faculty. Prerequisites: consent of instructor and signature of the department chair.Juniors or seniors only. F, S.491. Directed Readings (Staff)An in-depth exploration of special interest topics under the guidance of a faculty member. Thiscourse is for physical education majors only. There is a departmental rubric that guides the studentin successfully completing the course. Any exception to these protocols requires the signature of thedepartment chair. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. Juniors or seniors only. F, S.222
