Academic Honors and PrizesHonors Courses: (Two units of credit required) Courses for Honors Students are availableeach semester. Some of these may be interdisciplinary while others may be honors sections ofregular courses. “Honors in Course” does not qualify as an honors seminar. Honors seminarsused for University Honors requirements may not be taken Credit/No Entry.3. Pass a written comprehensive examination in the major department or program beforethe end of the fifth week of the spring semester of the senior year. Students should notifythe department before the end of fall semester that they intend to take the exam.4. Students intending to graduate with University Honors must obtain appropriate formsfrom the Office of Academic Affairs and then file an “Application to Graduate withUniversity Honors” with the Office of Academic Affairs no later than the end of the twelfthweek of the fall semester of the student’s senior year. They must also file with the Office ofAcademic Affairs, a “Certification of Honors Earned” no later than the twelfth week ofthe spring semester.Graduation withHonors in Scholarship Graduation with Honors in Scholarship requires an independent project, an oral exam on theproject, and a comprehensive exam in a student’s major department during the senior year.This program is open to any student who meets one of the following criteria:1. The student has attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in the major after thefall semester, junior year, as well as an overall grade point average of 3.00 OR2. The student does not have the grade point averages specified above but does have thesupport of his or her major department and has successfully petitioned the AcademicPolicy Committee.A project will involve two semesters of work, for which the student may earn up to two units ofindependent study credit (course 490). (These credits may not be used to fulfill the requirementsfor Graduation with University Honors.) The major department has the option of requiring thestudent to take specific courses or of modifying existing departmental courses or requirements forstudents seeking Graduation with Departmental Honors.Students have two possible timetables for pursuing Graduation with Honors in Scholarship—theJunior Cycle and the Senior Cycle. Each is designed to accommodate the scheduling variations ina student’s undergraduate academic career: apprenticeships, study abroad, independent researchproject schedules, and the like. Students should select the option that fits their needs as well as theschedule of their supervising professor.To apply for the program, the student should obtain the appropriate forms from the Office ofAcademic Affairs and, in consultation with the supervising professor, submit the completed formsto the Dean for Academic Affairs. Completed applications should reach the Dean’s office no laterthan the twelfth week in the fall semester of the student’s junior year for the Junior Cycle, and nolater than the twelfth week in the spring semester of the student’s junior year for the Senior Cycle.The student’s project must include a written report suitable for permanent inclusion in the library.The student must submit the completed project to an Examining Committee no later than onemonth before the end of classes during the fall semester of the senior year (Junior Cycle) or onemonth before the end of classes during the spring semester of the senior year (Senior Cycle).28
