Majors and Courses of InstructionBiological SciencesBOMI/ZOOL 120. Introduction to Cell Biology (1.25 units; Carreno, Hamill, Markwardt,Wolverton)Basic structure and function of cells and the molecular aspects of cell biology. Emphasis on cellevolution; organic compounds, including macromolecules; structure and function of proteins, organelles, and cellular membranes; energy transformations; and classical and molecular genetics.Lecture and laboratory. Prerequisite: a strong background in high school chemistry or CHEM 110.BOMI/ZOOL 100.5 and BOMI/ZOOL 120 may be taken in any order. F, S.BOMI 125. Introduction to Microbiology (1.25 units; Goldstein, Tuhela-Reuning)Examination of the structure and function of bacteria and viruses including physiological activities, genetics, and ecological roles in the environment. Laboratory experiments in media preparation, microscopic and physiological methods of identification of bacterial cultures. Lecture andlaboratory. Prerequisite: a strong background in high school biology or chemistry or CHEM 110. F.BOMI 200.1 Ethnobotany (1.25 units; Murray, Johnson)Interdisciplinary, project-based study of plants used by people. Adaptations including life historytraits of domesticated plants and wild food and medicinal plants from a variety of habitats will beconsidered. Students from backgrounds outside the biological sciences are welcome. Will be offeredthis year as a Sagan Course involving a required field trip to southern Mexico during Spring Break.S.BOMI 233. Ecology and the Human Future (Anderson)An introductory course in ecology and environmental science. Ecological principles and currentenvironmental issues are discussed. Topics include global changes, ozone loss, pollution problems, human population growth, species and ecosystems in jeopardy, biogeochemical cycles, food websand species interactions, invasive species, and conservation issues. This course is intended for firstand second year science majors and non-science majors of any class year. Lecture. F.ZOOL 251. Human Anatomy and Physiology (1.25 units; Panhuis)Students gain an understanding of the basic structure and function of the human organsystems. Regulatory mechanisms and responses to internal changes and environmental stressesare emphasized in lecture and class discussion. Demonstrations, dissection, and experimentaltechniques are used in the laboratory to illustrate aspects of both physiology and anatomy. Thiscourse is not open to students who have credit for ZOOL 325; science majors who have credit forBIOL 251 may not enroll in ZOOL 325 without special consent of the instructor. Prerequisite: oneunit in BOMI or ZOOL, preferably including some laboratory experience. S.BOMI 252. Biodiversity of Flowering Plants (1.25 units; Johnson)Diversity and evolution of the flowering plants. Study of microevolutionary phenomena, includingbreeding systems, chromosome pairing behavior and inheritance patterns in plant hybrids, speciation, and identification of woody plant species native to Ohio. Recognition of the majorfamilies of flowering plants, with study of macroevolutionary trends in morphology, biochemistry, and molecular features. Writing course. Prerequisite: One 100-level biology course or permission ofinstructor. F.64
