About the AuthorBorn in De Meern (NL) in 1976, <strong>Marten</strong> <strong>Poley</strong> attendedGymnasium education at Dr. F.H. de Bruijne Lyceumin Utrecht from 1988 to 1994. He went on to studyHealth Policy and Management at <strong>Erasmus</strong> University<strong>Rotterdam</strong> from which he graduated MSc in 1999. From1996 to 1999, he was a student research assistant atthe institute for Medical Technology Assessment (iMTA)/institute of Health Policy and Management (iBMG) of<strong>Erasmus</strong> MC <strong>Rotterdam</strong>. After his graduation, he joinediMTA/iBMG as a researcher.His field of interest is the cost-effectiveness evaluationof health care interventions. He has undertaken awide range of evaluations, for example regardingmedication distribution systems, general practitioners'laboratory test ordering, and the combining of economicand ethical arguments in prioritizing health careinterventions. From 1996 onwards, his main researcharea is the cost-effectiveness of neonatal surgery,the subject of this thesis. To this end, a collaborationbetween iMTA and the Department of Pediatric Surgeryat <strong>Erasmus</strong> MC-Sophia Children's Hospital in <strong>Rotterdam</strong>was established. Part-time employed by this departmentsince October 2002, his current research activities rangefrom cost-effectiveness studies of interdisciplinary careteams, parental support programs, and patient safetyprograms, to the follow-up of adults who as newbornsunderwent surgery for major birth defects.Next to his professional activities, <strong>Marten</strong> is readinglaw at <strong>Erasmus</strong> University School of Law.
