Both were named firstteamAll-Jayhawk East, while Kerr earned firstteamand Vandever second-team All-Region VI.Kerr was the top vote-getter for outfielders inRegion VI, so she automatically was nominated forAll-America.Jackie McChristian, freshman from Ark City, and Jenny Wolff, freshman from Wichita, werenamed to the second-team All-Jayhawk East.Honorable mention honors went to freshman pitcherSandy Erickson of Clay Center and MichelleIdeker, a freshman third baseman from Topeka.Erickson was Freshman of the Year in the JayhawkEast, while Hargrove earned Coach of the Yearhonors.Erickson joined Vandever as a second-teamAll-Region VI selection, while Ideker, Wolff, andApril Merritt, a freshman from Sand Springs, Okla.,were honorable mention selections.Conspicuously absent from any postseasonawards is Jill Hutchinson. However, the freshmancatcher from Ark City was voted Most ValuablePlayer by her teammates."That says an awful lot about Jill and what shemeans to this team," Hargrove said.Volleyball team sets markfor wins in single seasonThe Lady Tiger volleyball team set a schoolsingle-season record for victories in 1997 with 39,despite losing four consecutive matches at theRegion VI tournament to end the season.Cowley, 39-18-1, lost to Seward County 15-6,15-5; Johnson County 15-7, 15-11; Independence15-8, 13-15, 15-8; and Garden City 15-12, 15-7.Barton County defeated Seward in three sets tocapture the tournament title. The 39 victories broke the single-season recordof 38 set last season. Head coach Deb Nittler raisedher career totals to 326-259-8 inCowley.12 seasons atFour Lady Tigers earned All-JayhawkConference awards. "We started out strong, and then went througha slump, but we came back and finished reallystrong."Men's tennis team recordsanother top-five finishAfter his team finished the season in a tie forfifth place at nationals. Head Men's Tennis CoachLarry Grose felt the Tigers reached their potential."I always like to push some kids to the finals,"Grose said, "but I truly think we maxed our teamout. We couldn't push any further."A highly competitive field at the NJCAADivision II tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas, more on page 35
From page 34only allowed Cowley 16 points to tie with RegionVI rival Johnson County. DeKalb of Georgia wonthe title with 33 points. Collin County of Texas wassecond with 31. Jefferson College of St. Louis wasthird with 19 points, followed by Vincennes ofIndiana with 17."I only felt bad about the top-end guys losingearly," Grose said, referring to No. 1Pablo Mayorga, a sophomore from Bogota, singles playerColombia, and No. 2 Shae Wright, a sophomorefrom Arkansas City. "I like to see them meet thatkind of quality opponent in the quarterfinals orsemifinals."But it wasn't meant to be. And instead of gettingfavorable early draws, the Tigers found themselvesup against some of the top players in theirflights."Shae got a bye, but then he played a guy whomade the semifinals," Grose said. "There were 12to15 guys who could win any given flight."Three singles players and the No. 1doublesteam of Wright and Mayorga reached the semifinals.Matt Tunnell at No. 6, Win Bower at No. 5,and Seth Morgan at No. 3 all were within onematch of reaching the finals.Despite the fifth-place finish, tying Cowley'slowest in the lasthis team.10 years, Grose was pleased with"I always say that if you're in the top fiveyear-in and year-out, you're in very formidablecompany," he said. The Tigers did, however, win another RegionVI title, their seventh in 10 years. Also, Grose wasnamed the Wilson Sporting Goods Coach of theYear.Grose said he could compile a win-at-all-coststeam, but he doesn't want to."To make our program better, I've got to goout and violate the international rule, which Irefuse to do, and not choose the Kansas andOklahoma kids in our service area," Grose said. "Ifeel awfully good about who we are and keepingwith our mission statement. Sure, I could sneakdown to Texas or Florida to get a kid, but then I'vedestroyed that commitment we've made to Kansasand Oklahoma kids who can play for us."NJCAA rules cite that teams may only carrytwo international players on scholarship.Women's tennis teamcan't get out of regionalCowley's women's tennis team did not finishin the top two at the Region VI tournament, andtherefore failed to qualify for the national tournament.Head Coach Andre Spence said her teamimproved throughout the season, but a general lackof experience proved to be too costly in the end.Golf team to nationalsin second year backCowley's golf team, resurrected last year afternearly two decades of inactivity, qualified for thenational tournament this year after missing the cutin 1997.Coach Rex Soule's Tigers finished sixth in theDistrict III tournament in Garden City in late April, qualifying them for a trip to Dothan, Ala., and thenational NJCAA Division I tournament May 19-22.Cowley never got untracked at nationals andfinished the four-day event in 24th place.
