BOARD OF TRUSTEESCowley saw many positivesduring last academic yearThe 1998-99 academic yearwas challenging, rewarding, andsuccessful. And as chairman of theBoard of Trustees during that time, Iwanted to reflect a bit on the year.First and foremost, the collegeended the year in the black financially. Many community collegesare struggling financially as enrollmentis declining and state fundingis evaporating. The administrationand staff have worked diligently tokeep expenses at a minimum andstillprovide a quality education in astate-of-the-art environment. From the Act One play"Camelot" last fall to the G.E.D.graduation ceremony in the springof 1999, Cowley achieved manysuccesses. And as a board member,I am very proud to be a small partof these successes.Although the baseball team didnot win a third consecutive nationalchampionship, it did capture a fifthstraightJayhawk East title. Tigerathletics continue to be competitiveand exciting to watch. Each studentathlete gave their best. That isallyou can ask of a person. Cowleycontinues to produce extraordinarystudents who excel academically. We are very proud of all those whorepresented Cowley at the state andnational levels.Another event which was anhonor to attend was the G.E.D.graduation ceremony. These studentsdeserve an extra pat on theback for overcoming many hardshipsto attain their GED. Theenthusiasm from those attendingwas heartwarming and emotional, and you knew this was a dreamcome true for each graduate. In closing, the year was full ofexcitement, and many studentsaccomplished more than they everdreamed they could. This is notonly from their self-initiative, butalso from the encouragement andmentoring from all the instructorsand staff at Cowley.Cowley is a progressive andproud community college, and ourNo. 1goal is to provide our studentswith the skills they need to strive inthe future, no matter what theirvocation.Ieagerly anticipate what's instore for the next academic year.Ron Godsey, WinfieldChairman of the BoardDonna AveryArkansas CityAlbert Bacastow Jr.Arkansas CityPatti HunterArkansas CityLaDonna LanningWinfieldDennis ShurtzArkansas CitvI
