INSTITUTIONAL FUND-RAISINGSecond Annual Great CowleyDuck Dash a smashing successCorporate sponsors demonstratedtheir aquatic skills, people cheered forsmall, plastic ducks, the food was outstandingand the atmosphere . . . Well, youjust had to be there.On May 15, 1999, the Second AnnualGreat Cowley Duck Dash was held atSpring Hill Farms northeast of ArkansasCity. The land is owned by Carolyn andRobert Langenwalter. It offers the perfectsetting for duck races,gourmet picnic.fellowship, and aThe event raised nearly $11,000.That money will go to the EndowedScholarship Fund at the college.Terri Morrow, associate dean ofdevelopment and college relations, waspleased with the turnout and the amountraised."People are justamazing," Morrowsaid of donors to the college. "I can't sayenough about the generosity of hundredsof individuals and businesses. TheCollege Endowment Association has beenblessed with so much support. Fd like tothank everyone who helped make thisevent such a tremendous success."Ducks were $20 each or six for $ 1 00.Those who purchased ducks wereassigned numbers, which were written onthe bottom of small, colored plasticducks. Several heats of ducks weredumped into a small stream at Spring HillFarms. The winners of each race thenraced one last time to determine the winner.Jim Wheatcroft of Winfield was theNumbered plastic ducks make their way down the stream at Springowner of the winning duck. He wonHill Farm during the Second Annual Great Cowley Duck Dash.$1,500 cash for winning.A gourmet picnic of smoked prime rib and all the trimmings was held following the race.An added twist this year was a spirited competition between businesses. About a dozen entries competed in thecorporate races. Allen's Furniture and Carpet of Arkansas City had the winning duck and received the traveling"Dashing Drake Award." Long & Neises CPAs of Winfield captured the Duckorating Contest.Corporate sponsor Jim Sybrant had water up to his neck as he tried to maneuver his duck. And Allen Herman ofAllen's Furniture and Carpet also displayed his water skills."I think everybody had a great time," Morrow said. "There were a lot of creative ducks in the corporate race. Itwas nice to see the businesses take the race so seriously, and yet still have fun with it."
