Education and Training in Ethiopia An Evaluation of Approaching EFA Goals

are: the range of occupational areas, trades, skills and knowledge covered by availabletraining programmes is very limited; girls and women are underrepresented in trainingprogrammes, which is also due to the fact that existing provision mainly addresses typicalmale skills and occupations; and training provision for operating micro and smallentrepreneurs and people in employment hardly exists.Although Ethiopia is indicating progress towards the educational goals as defined byEFA and the ESDP, it is at a risk of not achieving the goals of primary access, genderequality, and educational quality within the desired timetable. Ethiopia is one of thepoorest countries in the world, needing continuous support from foreign governments andNGOs in education for sustainable development. The focus should be on the removal ofobstacles to educational access and on the promotion of the education of girls, teachertraining at all levels of education, and technical and vocational training. The relevance oftechnical and vocational education and training is a question critical to economic growthat the national level and to people’s well-being.11
