Beautiful yet functional, delicate yet strong, Chinese art has been prized by many throughout the centuries. In the
global art market today, we see major museums around the world feature prominent works of Chinese art in their
exhibitions, as well as a growing number of private collectors pay close attention to the limited availability of Chinese
antiquities in international circulation.

去 的 十 年 , 中 國 出 現 了 部 分 富 有 人 群 。 在 他
們 當 中 , 很 大 部 分 人 都 有 一 個 共 同 特 點 , 就
是 對 奢 侈 品 文 化 的 強 烈 渴 望 。 在 近 幾 年 國 際 奢 侈
品 零 售 業 務 統 計 的 數 據 中 也 可 以 觀 察 到 , 這 些 中
國 新 貴 對 歐 洲 工 藝 、 設 計 、 社 會 傳 統 , 以 及 任 何 優
雅 和 精 密 的 事 物 極 度 感 興 趣 。 他 們 對 奢 侈 品 文 化

的 藝 術 博 覽 會 。
In the past decade, we have witnessed a considerable growth of wealth among
the Chinese people. Although they represent only a tiny fraction of China’s
population, the country also has a steadily growing number of HNWIs (high-networth
individuals). One thing many of them have in common is a strong appetite
for luxury culture. This is shown in the hard data from the international luxury
retail businesses. This group of newly wealthy Chinese show great interest in
European craftsmanship, design, social traditions, and just about everything that
reflects elegance and sophistication. In their pursuit of luxury culture, many have
also found ways to explore their own cultural heritage – the Chinese luxury culture
– something that was highly condemned and nearly destroyed during the Cultural
Revolution several decades ago.
Rather than the concept of “Chinese luxury culture,” it is in fact an ancient way of
life. Ancient Chinese craftsmen and artists knew not only their own line of skills;
the great ones also improved their overall understanding of the arts through a
number of other practices. They would continuously study and perfect “the Four
Arts” (Qin Qi Shu Hua), which includes music, strategy, literature, and painting.
Many ancients believed that the true enlightenment of a man does not come from
his skill, but manifests in the art he creates. The artists meditated daily and often
gathered with their peers for philosophical discussions. These great artists lived
not only to improve their understanding of the arts, but also their understanding
of life itself. As a result, they obtained wisdom and inspiration to create sublime
works of art that have come to represent the pinnacle of Chinese culture in the
global art market today.
In the art market outside of China, apart from the big auction houses with periodic
Chinese fine art auctions dedicated to different epochs and specific regions,
diligent Chinese antique collectors are also following a number of important art
fairs in Europe.
今 年 早 春 , 來 自 世 界 各 地 的 大 型 博 物 館 代 表 和 各 界 藝
術 收 藏 家 聚 集 在 世 界 頂 級 藝 術 博 覽 會 ——TEFAF 馬 斯
特 里 赫 , 一 睹 世 界 上 最 精 緻 而 稀 有 的 物 品 。 在 經 過 由
委 員 會 審 查 並 批 准 的 古 董 中 , 當 然 也 少 不 了 精 緻 的 中
國 古 董 和 藝 術 精 品 。
在 博 覽 會 期 間 ,Jorge Welsh Oriental Porcelain and
Works of Art 的 一 對 清 朝 乾 隆 年 間 (1730 年 至 1795 年 )
的 釉 下 鈷 藍 大 花 瓶 被 一 位 歐 洲 私 人 收 藏 家 以 六 位 數
的 價 格 買 走 。 同 樣 交 易 狀 況 不 錯 的 Rossi & Rossi 以 35
萬 美 元 的 要 價 將 一 座 18 世 紀 早 期 , 帶 油 漆 痕 跡 的 鎏 金
銅 坐 佛 賣 給 了 一 位 亞 洲 客 戶 。Vanderven Oriental Art

來 說 , 這 些 物 品 更 像 是 一 本 歷 史 的 回 憶 錄 , 記 載 著 古
人 的 智 慧 與 純 美 。 仔 細 想 一 想 , 這 些 各 種 尺 寸 和 形 狀
的 中 國 古 代 藝 術 作 品 , 或 許 是 唯 一 經 過 歲 月 苦 難 留 存
至 今 的 物 質 遺 產 , 有 機 會 讓 今 天 的 世 界 窺 視 中 國 古 老
的 神 傳 文 化 以 及 當 時 人 們 的 生 活 狀 態 。
下 一 屆 TEFAF 馬 斯 特 里 赫 特 歐 洲 藝 術 博 覽 會 將 於 2016
年 3 月 11-20 日 , 在 馬 斯 特 里 赫 特 MECC 再 次 舉 行 。
Earlier this spring, every major museum and serious art collector from all over
the world gathered at one of the world’s leading fine art fairs, TEFAF Maastricht,
to get a glimpse of some of the world’s most exquisite and rare objects. Among
the antiques vetted and approved by the fair committee, there were a number of
exquisite Chinese antiques and artwork. Like all antiques, time naturally made its
mark on these ancient beauties, but if anything, their history and age have added
to their distinctive charm.
Jorge Welsh Oriental Porcelain and Works of Art showcased a pair of large Chinese
export “soldier” vases from the Qianlong Period (1730-1795) of the Qing Dynasty.
The vases were painted in underglaze cobalt blue and enamel, and was sold to a European
private collector for a six figure sum. Rossi & Rossi sold an early 18th-century
gilt-bronze seated Buddha with traces of paint, which had an asking price of
$350,000 US dollars, and was sold to an existing Asian client. Vanderven Oriental
Art had a Bronze “Bo” from the early Warring States Period (475-221 BC) that had
an asking price of $2 million and was also sold to a private collector.
We might not understand the intricate evaluation criteria of their monetary
worth, but we can surely appreciate the cultural meanings these antiques hold,
perhaps more so for the Chinese people. These objects are like memoirs of their
ancestors, embodying wisdom and beauty from an earlier time. Come to think of
it, Chinese antiques and artwork, in various sizes and forms, might just be the only
tangible legacy that survived the test of time to offer our world today, glimpses of
the everyday life in the ancient and divine inspired Chinese culture.

Maastricht.
