Seriously deep dives
In 1960, a seemingly impossible underwater
mission spurred a new breakthrough in
the realm of dive watches. Jacques Piccard
and Don Walsh had decided to embark on a
journey to the lowest point on Earth – the
bottom of the Mariana Trench. It was a place
10,916 meters below the surface of the Pacific
Ocean, and where no submersible has ever
ventured. Of course, Rolex was there to join
their mission.
In order to conquer the crushing pressure of
the incredible depths, Rolex developed the
Deep Sea Special. The Deep Sea Special had
a massive orb-like Plexiglas, and an incredible
thickness of 3.6 centimeters. During the
mission, the Deep Sea Special was strapped
to the outside of the submersible. It survived
a pressure 1,100 times than that of what is
present at the ocean’s surface, which gave
Rolex the honor of making another important
advancement in history.
