To understand basic psychological pr<strong>in</strong>ciples concern<strong>in</strong>g stress, cop<strong>in</strong>g, emotion,<br />

and emotion regulation, and their impact and <strong>in</strong>fluence on combat sports<br />

such as judo<br />

To understand the zone of optimal stress related to performance<br />

To understand the close relationship between stress and emotion with motivation<br />

and behavior<br />

To provide practical <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to how coaches and athletes can improve the<br />

management of stress and emotions related to competition<br />

Psychological issues play a major role <strong>in</strong> optimiz<strong>in</strong>g health and improv<strong>in</strong>g performance<br />

of athletes <strong>in</strong> combat sports. Psychological pr<strong>in</strong>ciples are important to understand<br />

and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> motivation for gruel<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g regimens over long periods of<br />

time, deal<strong>in</strong>g with pre-competition preparation and stress dur<strong>in</strong>g competition, and<br />

redef<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g goals and objectives after competition. Coaches and athletes at all levels<br />

realize the importance of all of these issues.<br />

In this chapter, we discuss the psychological issues related to motivation and<br />

competition stress <strong>in</strong> the one combat sport that we know best, judo. We all br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

our experiences <strong>in</strong> competitive judo to bear on the issues we <strong>in</strong>troduce <strong>in</strong> this<br />

chapter, 1 and blend them with the psychological research literature provid<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
