Clearly, the TUE Committee should face a considerable challenge <strong>in</strong> apply<strong>in</strong>g these<br />

criteria.<br />

4.9.3 Drug-Test<strong>in</strong>g Process<br />

Discussion regard<strong>in</strong>g the details of dop<strong>in</strong>g control process is not <strong>in</strong> the scope of this<br />

chapter. Nevertheless, the general procedures of drug test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> competition is summarized<br />

<strong>in</strong> Fig. 4.2 .<br />

4.9.4 Roles and Responsibility of Athletes<br />

In the process of dop<strong>in</strong>g control, athletes have some roles and responsibilities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

To be knowledgeable of and comply with all applicable anti-dop<strong>in</strong>g policies and<br />

rules adopted pursuant to the code<br />

To be available for sample collection<br />

To take responsibility, <strong>in</strong> the context of anti-dop<strong>in</strong>g, for what they <strong>in</strong>gest and use<br />

To <strong>in</strong>form medical personnel of their obligation not to use prohibited substances and<br />

methods and to take responsibility to make sure that any medical treatment received<br />

does not violate anti-dop<strong>in</strong>g policies and rules adopted pursuant to the code [23]<br />

4.9.5 Test<strong>in</strong>g In and Out of Competition<br />

Orig<strong>in</strong>ally, test<strong>in</strong>g was scheduled with<strong>in</strong> competition only. Athletes participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

an event recognized that they were likely to be selected for test<strong>in</strong>g. To counter this,<br />

they began to reschedule their drug use to the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g period and to calculate clearance<br />

times <strong>in</strong> the body. The extension of test<strong>in</strong>g to the out-of-competition period<br />

was <strong>in</strong>tended to address this trend.<br />

Establishment of the WADA represents a major step forward <strong>in</strong> the achievement<br />

of a worldwide program of out-of-competition test<strong>in</strong>g [26] .<br />

4.9.6 Sanctions<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to WADA Code, <strong>in</strong> the case of anti-dop<strong>in</strong>g rule violation, athletes may<br />

be subject to two forms of sanction: disqualification and <strong>in</strong>eligibility.
