courses. Senior Human Services majors<br />
will complete a research project about a<br />
particular human service problem.<br />
They will complete a literature review<br />
on their topic, collect and analyze data,<br />
and write a research report. (Offered<br />
annually) Prerequisites: HS 343<br />
Intervention Strategies, and eligible for<br />
graduation upon completion of the<br />
course, or permission of the instructor<br />
program. Placement is based upon an<br />
entrance reading test. Ordinarily,<br />
students are expected to complete this<br />
course by the end of their first year of<br />
college (September to September or<br />
January to January). Students who<br />
participate in Summer <strong>College</strong> (August)<br />
prior to their first year of school must<br />
complete this course by the end of that<br />
academic year (May). Students who fail<br />
this course twice will be dismissed from<br />
the <strong>College</strong>. (Offered on an ―as<br />

HU 099 Foundations of Reading<br />
3 non-degree credits<br />
Students will develop technical and<br />
college-level vocabulary while<br />
practicing textbook attack strategies<br />
and critical comprehension skills. This<br />
course prepares students for HU100<br />
Fundamentals of <strong>College</strong> Reading.<br />
Placement is based upon entrance<br />
reading test. The grade for this course<br />
will not be calculated into the GPA;<br />
however, students who fail this course<br />
will be dismissed from the <strong>College</strong>.<br />

HU 100D Fundamentals of <strong>College</strong><br />
Reading<br />
3 non-degree credits<br />
Students will develop critical thinking<br />
and logic skills while improving<br />
comprehension and cognition skills<br />
through the use of effective reading<br />
strategies in preparation for collegelevel<br />
reading assignments in various<br />
disciplines. This course provides three<br />
college credits which are factored into<br />
the GPA. However, these credits are<br />
taken in addition to the total credit<br />
requirements of the student's major<br />

HU 160 Introduction to Philosophy<br />

This course introduces the central<br />
problems of philosophy and their<br />
cultural and intellectual foundations. It<br />
considers solutions proposed by some<br />
of the greatest thinkers of the Western<br />
philosophical tradition, and some from<br />
non-Western traditions as well. The<br />
material covered includes selections by<br />
both current and historically important<br />
philosophers and explores basic<br />
questions concerning the scope and<br />
limits of human knowledge, the<br />
fundamental nature of reality, and the<br />
personal and moral dimensions of<br />
human existence. The course fulfills the<br />
General Education Cultural Literacy<br />

HU 165 Critical Thinking:<br />
Language and Logic<br />
3 credits (AS)<br />
Students are introduced to and develop<br />
a range of critical thinking and<br />
reasoning skills necessary for effectively<br />
analyzing the assorted claims with<br />
which life confronts them. The course<br />
covers the basics of informal logic,<br />
specific types of argument, common<br />
errors in reasoning, and the keys to<br />
evaluating and constructing extended<br />
