SA 211 Figure Drawing<br />

Figure Drawing is a second year<br />

drawing course emphasizing the human<br />

figure. The nude model is used as a<br />

vehicle for learning about<br />

foreshortening, proportion, and varied<br />

drawing media. Simultaneously,<br />

students explore historic, conceptual<br />

and expressive aspects of the human<br />

figure in art. For advanced work in<br />

figure drawing, this course can be<br />

"stacked" (taken multiple times by<br />

taking Research Topics in the Visual<br />

Arts FA371/372/471 or 472). (Offered<br />

fall term) Prerequisite: SA 112 Drawing II<br />

SA 231 Printmaking<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

Students are exposed to various<br />

printmaking techniques such as:<br />

intaglio, relief, and a range of<br />

experimental applications. Knowledge<br />

of these media enable students to<br />

experience new drawing techniques and<br />

to gain an understanding of the art of<br />

multiples. For advanced work in<br />

printmaking, this course can be<br />

SA 241 Ceramics<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

Students are introduced to the basic<br />

methods of preparing and forming clay,<br />

so as to develop an understanding of<br />

clay as a sculptural and functional<br />

medium. They are exposed to pinch,<br />

coil and slab methods, as well as wheel<br />

throwing, decorating and glazing. For<br />

advanced work in ceramics, this course<br />

can be "stacked" (taken multiple times<br />

by taking Research Topics in the Visual<br />

Arts FA371/372/471 or 472). (Offered<br />

fall and spring terms)<br />

SA 242 Sculpture: Glass/Mixed<br />

Media<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

Using a variety of sculpture techniques,<br />

students explore the essential<br />

characteristics of three-dimensional<br />

form through projects that address<br />

scale, space, multiples, site and<br />

materials. The course investigates basic<br />

glass fusing/kiln forming, casting, and<br />

welding techniques. Students study the<br />

work of contemporary and historically<br />

significant sculptors. For advanced<br />

work in sculpture, glass or metals, this<br />

course can be ―stacked into‖ multiple<br />

times by taking Research Topics in the<br />

Visual Arts FA371/372/471 or 472.<br />

SA 261 Studio Photography<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

Students work in a fully equipped<br />

studio using strobe lighting systems,<br />

medium format and digital cameras to<br />

create portraiture, figure and product<br />

photography under controlled lighting<br />

situations. A variety of lighting<br />

techniques are studied. (Offered fall<br />

term) Prerequisite: SA 161 Photography I,<br />

and SA 162 Photography II, or permission of<br />

instructor<br />

SA 263 Digital Photography<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course covers the practice of<br />

digital photography with emphasis on<br />

using professional production<br />

techniques to build an efficient<br />

workflow to maximize productivity and<br />

creativity with digital photography.<br />
