Human Services: Children and Youth<br />
Bachelor of Science<br />
The Children and Youth concentration provides an overview of services available for<br />
children and adolescents. The curriculum addresses issues related to current social<br />
services and counseling practices, providing the student with a base knowledge about<br />
the systems and services related to children and adolescents.<br />
Goals:<br />
• Provide students with an understanding of the social services system;<br />
• Develop basic counseling skills and approaches for children and adolescents;<br />
• Develop an understanding of child development theory and childhood disorders; and<br />
• Prepare students for professional social service and counseling environments.<br />
Special Features:<br />
Two internships (160 hours each) in social services or child-related settings are based on<br />
students‘ interests, experience and academic preparation.<br />
Program Requirements:<br />
• Students must earn a minimum grade of a "C" in each 100-200-level Human Services<br />
course;<br />
• Students must have earned at least 30 academic hours to be eligible for internship;<br />
• Students may repeat 100/200-level Human Services courses in which they first earned<br />
a grade less than "C" only once; students who cannot achieve a grade of "C" or above<br />
on the second attempt may not continue in the program; and<br />
• Students must complete 12 credit hours in a Children and Youth Internship.<br />
