Standards for Mathematical Practice Students who are mathematically proficient should: Use appropriate tools strategically. • Know how to use a variety of tools, including pencil and paper, rulers, scales, calculators, and mathematical software. • Choose the best tool for different situations, explain why it was chosen, and use it correctly (when to use a compass versus a protractor).
