International <strong>Diabetes</strong> Federation<br />

Michael Hirst was elected President-Elect of IDF, the International <strong>Diabetes</strong><br />

Federation, at the World <strong>Diabetes</strong> Congress <strong>in</strong> Montreal <strong>in</strong> October 2009.<br />

He will succeed the current President, Professor Jean Claude Mbanya of<br />

Cameroon at the end of 2012, and will serve <strong>in</strong> the triennium 2012-2015.<br />

Michael’s <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> diabetes started over 20 years ago when his younger<br />

daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 5. He was then<br />

a Member of the British Parliament and campaigned vigorously for improved care for people with<br />

diabetes. He was thereafter co-opted to the board of trustees of the British Diabetic Association, now<br />

<strong>Diabetes</strong> UK, where he served <strong>in</strong> a number of capacities before becom<strong>in</strong>g the first non-medical Chair<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2001. He served as Chair until February 2006, and is now a Vice President of <strong>Diabetes</strong> UK.<br />
