With its tendency to have accelerated rise once glucose intolerance starts affecting women of
childbearing age, diabetes, unlike any other disease, can have very high prevalence in any general
population almost becoming its part with difficult to control it later. thus, considering the rising and
potentially self-perpetuating situation of diabetes prevalence, the approach of primary prevention
of diabetes, focusing on modest loss of excess weight and moderate-intensity exercise, in people,
particularly with impaired glucose tolerance, has to be widened into the concept of control in the
community. there may be many other factors, and controversies, to consider, but the need and
possible programmes for the control of diabetes epidemic, particularly in developing countries, are
clear. this is obvious from the recommended body mass index published for different populations,
for example by the Who Western pacific region office, the Consensus statement from india etc.
if the pandemic of diabetes is allowed to continue as it is now, the adults with normal glucose
intolerance could become minority in the World within a few decades, despite having available all
the scientific facts, recommendations, organizations, experts and resources. there is urgent need
of planning and spelling out and vigorous implementation of all the possible control measures of
glucose intolerance and diabetes.
Making Medical Students Enthusiastic about Diabetes Care
Professor Rhys Williams
We are all committed to diabetes. in our working lives we devote time, energy and
enthusiasm to preventing diabetes, preventing the consequences of diabetes and
improving the lives of people with diabetes. the reasons we chose to do that are many
– contact with inspiring teachers, either by design or by chance; being in a challenging
but satisfying professional situation, again by design or by chance; a personal experience
with diabetes and its consequences and probably many, many more. this presentation
will explore some of the ways by which we chose to enter the diabetes world but, more
importantly, will explore ways by which we can entice our students and our junior doctors
to follow in our footsteps.
